How did Girly is Good get started? (2009)
Girly is Good came to exist 7 years ago, and was created by Emily Hayes.

Who is currently on the team?
Girly is Good consists of (in order of length of time on the show) Emily 'Folk Queen Extraordinaire' Hayes, Maria 'The Original Rock Goddess' Sokratis', Hayley 'Hip Hopper' Van Es, Erica 'Glam Rock Superstar' Lewis, and Vivienne 'Bluesy Songstress' Black. The team is diverse, with vastly different passions, interests snd influences. Girly is Good embrace these differences and use them to cover as many different genres and scenes as possible in order to best represent for the ladeez!

How has Girly is Good nurtured the talents of it's broadcasters?

Each of the broadcasters are extremely proactive and try to get out to as many gigs as possible. They are also involved in the Melbourne music scene in different ways, gigging, promoting, managing, organising, etc.

The Girly crew are known for their uber successful Girls Rock Out and Filly Fest festival gigs, which they put on in partnership with some of other Ladee shows on 3CR. These gigs feature up and coming Melbourne, regional and interstate bands, duets, and solo artists across a broad range of musical genres and help to fundraise for 3CR.

What is the format and ethos of the show?

The format is relatively casual. The Girly ethos is to support and play as many local acts as is humanly possible - Girly also have their finger on pulse of music scenes abroad. Girly is Good often have interviews with musicians, artists, actors, photographers, writers and anything else in between.

The Girly crew play kickin music, hot off the press, and sometimes even a Girly is Good exclusive!! Girly review plays, gigs, cds, books, exhibitions or anything else arty they have come across recently.
Girly have a regular gig guide to promote performances by local and visiting artists.

If you're a woman in the arts, the Girly is Good crew want to hear from you!! Girly love getting new music to play on the show, and are more than happy to have a bit of a chinwag with you too! They will promote your show and review anything you throw their way.

Women are under-represented in a lot of arts scene that the general public see, so Girly is Good have taken up the task of evening the score!

What have been some highlight interviews? Why?

Girly is Good have interviewed too many ladeez to mention. Some highlights include:
Kylie Auldist (singer with The Bamboos)
Sarah Blasko
Abby Dobson
Liz Stringer
Paris Wells
Mia Dyson
Laura Jean
Toshi Reagon (USA)
Maureen (Director of La Mama Theatre, Melbourne)
Dancers/Circus performers from Women's Circus and performance group Quiche Lorraine

...Just to name a few!!!

Future directions?

Girly is Good have just welcomed their newest addition to the crew, Vivienne Black! There will be more interviews with talented creative women, more gigs and fundraisers for 3CR, more new music than you could poke a stick at, and so much dancing, fun and frivolity that if they lived in that town on Footloose, they would surely be exhiled!

CRAM Article November 2007: Super Heroes Take Over the Airwaves on 3CR's Girly is Good

The Girly is Good super heros, aka Maria and Emily, have declared war on the misogyny of the music industry and arts scenes in general.

They have decided to occupy the airwaves until mainstream media give women musicians and artists equal recognition, pay and kudos. The Girly is Good super heros manifesto states that women shall be celebrated for all there creative work. The program aims to support women artists, film makers, writers, and musicians by allowing them to bask in the super hero powers of 3CR's Maria and Emily. The powers give a voice to these women to promote their art form or event on the people’s radio station. It is all lots of fun and there is always a happy ending at the end of the show!

The backstory: How did it all begin? Many moons ago in the year 2000, 3CR was celebrating International Women's Day, Emily Hayes was asked to present a women's music program as part of the 24 hour special programming. Presenting a radio show is a very transforming experience and she began to feel the power of community radio to effect changes for women and other groups ignored by the mainstream. Women at 3CR are given the opportunity to speak, sing, play and create radio, which was how the program Girly is Good began. In May 2001 after completing the 3CR training and having received lots of encouragement from 3CR staff and volunteers the show began. Five years on many women have been involved in the show as technicians on Live to Air music performances: Adele Colin, Cara Beltrame, Meg Butler, Lottie Stein, and Nicole Hurtabise. The presenting team has changed over the years as women come and go from in front of the mic. Past presenters include Cara Beltrame, Larrisa Tandy, and Meg Butler. The current team is Maria Sokratis and Emily Hayes.

Show highlights from its five year archive include; interviewing North American civil rights activist and musician Bernice Johnson Reagan from Sweet Honey and The Rock. "Live to Air" performances from Jollie Holland, Lou Bennett and the Sweet Cheeks, Rose Turtle Ertler, Monica Weightman, Mia Dyson, Git, the Stiletto Sisters and many more. Interviews with comedians Tania Losano, Nelly Thomas, and Sista She and heaps more amazing women.

Besides being a super hero Emily Hayes is a musician and feminist. She founded the show after graduating from music school where much of the music that was studied was by men and taught by men. Frustrated by the lack of attention paid to women artists and musicians she felt the need for a radio show that helped support women and inform the broader 3CR listening public about women's music and art. Emily sings in a local folk band and is working on a solo political cabaret act.

Maria Sokratis is a musician, DJ and artist. She joined the Girly is Good team in May this year. She has been a regular guest on the show talking about her music, as a guest DJ spinning vinyl tunes from the 1960's Girls in Garage collections, and her bands The Mystaken have played live on the show and appeared on 3CR compilations. Maria is a 3CR receptionist on Friday afternoons and is involved is organising the Tomorrow Is Today Festival with 3CR's SUWA Show presenter Ian MacIntyre about Psychedelic music in Melbourne.
