City Limits - September Housing Update

Wednesday, 16 September 2020 - 9:00am to 10:00am

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Federal intervention into the Victorian ALP, and so Kevin kicks off the show with an on-the-ground perspective of events that led to formalised factionalism within the ALP.

Later, Howard Marosi from Friends of Public Housing joins Kevin and Meg to give us a comprehensive update on housing in Victoria.

Topics discussed:

  • Keating's recent calls for "public housing" (here and here), despite historically privatising funding for public housing, and cutting it by $70,000 (from 7.1% down to 5.2%) during his time in power
  • The Victorian Government announces an extension of rent relief and assistance
  • The Australian Greens plan to build 100,000 public houses in Victoria
  • Private Community Housing group Housing First being given another Balaclava Carpark by the Port Phillip Council, as well as $22M by the State Government to develop (here).
  • Rents drop in Melbourne and Sydney CBDs over the past year
  • Australia Post chief executive and the delivery of Pauline Hanson stubby holders to locked down towers in July (here)
