Today is the 5th Wednesday and we're talking sustainable city planning for Melbourne. Our guests are former co-host Mark Allen, town planning activist from 'Population, Permaculture and Planning and Holistic Activism.net'. He tells us about the massive environmental impacts of Melbourne's sprawling concrete-heavy housing industry, and the importance of maintaining and re-using existing buildings to create affordable housing. In the show's second half Dr Kate Shaw, urban geographer from the University of Melbourne tells us about her parrallel research into dockland redevelopments in cities around the world, and how Melbourne's is a missed opportunity to create equitable public housing. Kate also comments on the current State Goverment's public housing redeveoplment policies and the massive loss of public land that is going on as we speak.
