Back in Melbourne’s dinosaur days in the late 1970's there was music from another kitchen inside a weird alternate universe. In the ‘real’ world ockerism was pervasive, Queensland was a corrupt police state and Australia’s immigration laws were called the White Australia Policy which Gough Whitlam abolished in 1973. A dark shadow arrived in the form of the Malcolm Fraser's Liberal party and in the face of a shitty government, little cash and boredom, creative artists turned to humour and satire.
There was Tracey Harvey and Mitchell Faircloth in the Whittle Family, Norman Gunston, Peter Lillie, Bachelors From Prague and leading the pack of musical humour surrealists were the purple kings of cabaret The Pete Best Beatles. Specialising in riotous live shows the Beatles released a live album recorded at The Kenny Rogers Room at the Stockade Hotel in Carlton that featured Gary Adams on Drums & Vocals, Rod Haywood guitar and vocals, Johnny Topper Bass and vocals, James Williams Keyboards, guitar and vocals and last but definitely not least ace rhythm guitarist, drummer & vocalist Frank Savage.
In the UK there was The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias, the U.S had Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention and we had the Pete Best Beatles. Eventually the Beatles morphed into The North 2 Alaskans with the adition of the fabulous Spencer P Jones who had a ball playing in the band and would later go on to play in The Johnnys and The Beasts of Bourbon.
