This episode is a prelude to, and recognition of, Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), a day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and victories of transgender & gender non-conforming people while raising awareness of the work that is still needed to save trans lives.

James speaks with Ari Dunphy, a Child and Family Practitioner at Queerspace, specialising in supporting trans adults, young people, and their families. They discuss non-binary representation within mainstream Australian and trans communities, including discussions on misgendering and pronouns, resisting and creating visibility, the notion of being ‘not trans enough’ or ‘completely trans’, and the binary construction of gender. They discussed the need for affordable health care for trans people and the ‘huge out of pocket expenses’ for hormone therapy and surgery, increasing support for trans men, the upcoming federal election campaign and giving a platform to issues of importance for the trans and broader LGBTIQ community, and the Victorian government’s intended ban of conversion practices.
