The dominant food system at present favours large-scale farmers producing food sold cheaply at supermarkets far away from where it was grown. The goal of the Co-op is to provide an alternative to this, building a supportive community of diverse organic farmers who lease land on a single farm and sell the produce to the local community.
This is the second part of a two part interview. In last week's episode Katie described the Community Supported Agriculture model in which consumers commit to purchasing produce a season at a time, sharing the risk with the farmer. And also about the importance of setting up the enterprise as a co-operative in which growers commit to shared values. In this, the second part, Katie focuses on small farm viability.
