We present a very special breakfast on the 25th December as we dig into the archives to bring you a unique address by Nelson Mandela to the Victorian trade union movement in 1990 at Melbourne Town Hall. Mandela had come to thank them for their solidarity work and for their support in bringing down the apartheid system in South Africa, and 3CR was there broadcasting live. Paperback Writers
From December 24th onwards Iain McIntyre will be presented a summer series entitled Paperback Writers every Tuesday from 4pm to 5.30pm in place of Tuesday Hometime. The program will explore the world of pulp paperback publishing from the 1950s to the 1970s through interviews with the likes of Harlan Ellison, Ann Bannon, Marijane Meaker/Vin Packer and more. Tuesday Breakfast
On Tuesday Breakfast this January we’ve got a four-part series on solidarity between women in the arts. Hear from a diverse range of women, both established practitioners and emerging artists, about their experiences working in the arts and with other women.
7th of January: Simona Kapitolina is an artist who comes from a design and architecture background. She is also a musician, singer-songwriter, DJ and producer. She runs the online music label Girls Who Smoke Poke and the monthly gender diverse music event The Shock of the New. She’s currently preparing a solo album for release in March.
14th of January: Sarahnya Kumar is an artist working in theatre, performance, music and poetry in Melbourne. Last year she was involved in a production called HiRISe, created by the theatre group ReDEFIANT as part of the Fringe Festival. This production looked at questions of identity and belonging and the experiences of ethnic minorities, immigrants and refugees.
21st of January: Claire Gaskin is a Melbourne based poet and teacher. Her writing often touches on questions of sex, sexuality and feminism, among other themes. In November she published her second major collection, Paperweight, with Hunter Publishers.
28th of January: Jess Johnson is a visual artist with a very vibrant and distinctive aesthetic. She has exhibited in many galleries both in Australia and overseas including, recently, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. She is a resident artist at the Gertrude Contemporary Gallery here in Fitzroy and is taking part in the Melbourne Now exhibition.
