UCLA-based academic and activist Daniel Pérez Gámez collaborates with Thursday Breakfast programmer Priya to bring you a conversation about the struggle for justice and self-determination by Indigenous land defenders and allied activists in Mexico City. Daniel and Priya delve into the land defence activities and criminalisation of the Indigenous community of San Gregorio Atlapulco, Xochimilco, Mexico City, in the wake of calls for solidarity with veteran activist Hortensia Telésforo Jiménez and her comrades after police and vigilantes violently attacked them during a rally on the 5th of September this year. The audio is a combination of a conversation between Priya and Daniel about the context of this activism and struggle for urban Indigenous community control over communal spaces under contemporary Mexican neoliberalism, and a dubbed interview with Hortensia and her comrades Max Negrete (also from the General Permanent Assembly of San Gregorio Atlapulco), Anselma Margarita (Otomí) and Gato about the events of 5th September.

The song used throughout today's show is Trincheras by Mexico City-based duo Zeiba Kuicani and El Flores, from their 2024 album Somos Flechas.
