Thursday 23rd November marks the 100th Anniversary of Public Radio.  

 

6am Stick Together: 100 years of the wireless
This episode of Stick Together takes a look back at 100 years of radio in Australia, playing some early audio of community radio and looking at the ways that radio has impacted the country. 

7am  Thursday Breakfast
At 8am Spike Chippalone speaks with 3CR Chairperson, Pilar Aguilera about her long-time involvement with public broadcasting at 3CR, some of the history and where it's headed.  Pilar will be speaking at an ABC Friends Victoria event Tuning In or Fading Out: Radio’s Past, Present and Future that will look at the future of a medium that has been a source of entertainment, information, and companionship for generations and the wider implications for public engagement in a changing media environment.

12pm  Centenary of Radio special
Join Steam Radio host Andrew Nolte in a journey back 100 years to the dawn of Australian broadcast. To commemorate the Centenary of Radio this 1 hour special programme will feature rare early Australian recordings played directly from their original format.  Marvel at the music of the Jazz Age and the variety acts of the stages of Melbourne and Sydney which were widely received via broadcast. Take a trip down memory lane to post-war Australia where owning a wireless was a crucial part of embracing the modern way of living!

At 8am, the team speaks with radio stalwart Deb Welch on her career in radio, starting at 3CR in the 1980s, and the importance of community radio. Listen to interview here.

 

Wednesday 22 November

7am Wednesday Breakfast

At 8.10am, Grace Tan and Claudia Craig speak with journalist and broadcaster Sonia Randhawa, the founder of Radiq Radio, to share more about this grassroots project and the international community radio landscape. Malaysia had to wait until the early 2000s for its first community radio station. Radiq Radio brought the voices of refugees, squatters, factory workers and other marginalised groups to listeners in Malaysia, via a shortwave transmitter located in Indonesia. 3CR has a long history of presenting live coverage of union and social justice protests, blockades and occupations including the Honeymoom Mine occupation, the nurses dispute (including the 2012 nurses dispute), the MUA picket, the S11 World Economic Forum protests, Occupy Melbourne and more recently the TAFE4ALL campaign.
