Our very special guest on this show was the co-captain of the local soccer team known as Melbourne Victory AWT who currently play in State League 2 competition here in Victoria. In 2021 these same girls made up the Afghanistan National Team in Kabul. As the Taliban took over after the exit of American troops, each member of the team had to make a terrible decision - stay with their families in Kabul or escape to freedom. Former Socceroo Craig Foster pulled some strings and the whole team were issued with Australian Visas and found themselves in Melbourne. Melbourne Victory FC took them in and enabled them to stay together and play as a team in the Victorian competition.
- We begin the show talking about the Matildas and Lydia Williams.
- A quick mention of the World T20 championships in the West Indies and USA
- Mursal Sadat shared with us her story and that of the Afghan Women's Team. She also spoke with great wisdom regarding Leadership and the Power of community.
- Up until now FIFA will not recognise the team, instead referring that responsibility to the Afghanistan government, which of course will never sanction a women's football team while under Taliban influence. There is a petition requesting FIFA to officially recognise them in time for the Asian Games qualifiers in 2026. After listening to her story I'm hopeful you will want to sign the petition.
