In 1842 two indigenous freedom fighters, Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner, were the first men executed in Victoria for having the audacity to resist the British colonisation of their lands and the destruction of their people and their way of life. Each year, on January 20, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Freedom Fighters Day, the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee holds a public ceremony at the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner memorial on the corner of Victoria and Fanklin Streets, Melbourne, to honour the indigenous men, women and children who, during the colonisation process, were killed for protecting their lands, their families, their culture.
