Acting Up! - 45 Years of FoE - International focus

Tuesday, 14 January 2020 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Celebrating 45 years of Friends of the Earth - International focus. FoE started in the US then went to Europe, and started as a "global north" middle class environment group. FoE International has a democratic model where 1 country has 1 vote. The org then expanded to Malaysia and Africa, and takes the approach of wanting to go to places other groups ignore. After the breakup of USSR, FoE was active in Eastern Europe, as well as Latin America and SE Asia. Now due to our regional structure, most of our voting is in the "global south", with Europe & Nth America having less sway. This influences our campaigns and politics.
Presenter: Em Gayfer. Guests: Lee Tan talks about doing FoE campaigning at local and international levels. Peter Hayes (who was part of founding FoE Australia) details the history of FoE's international groups and the importance of being devolved, decentralised, and unstoppable. Hye Lin discusses her work in FoE South Korea. Sam Cossar Gilbert from FoE International talks about current international work.
